Two angles are supplementary. One is 52° more than three times the other. Find the measures of the angles. Supplementary angles are angles whose sum is 180°.

What is the measure of the smaller angle?

What is the measure of the larger angle?

Let's call one of the angles  " a "  and the other angle  " b " .

Let     a  =  52° + 3b

and since the angles are supplementary,

a + b  =  180°          In this equation, substitute  52° + 3b  in for  a .

52° + 3b + b  =  180°              Subtract  52°  from both sides of the equation.

3b + b  =  180° - 52°               Combine like terms.

4b  =  128°                             Divide both sides by  4 .

b  =  32°

And since   a + b  =  180°  ,   a   =   180° - b   =   180° - 32°   =   148°

a  =  148°
