Which of the following processes are endothermic?

water boiling

gasoline burning

ice forming on a pond

iodine crystals subliming

I think A and D

Which of the following processes would be exothermic?

evaporation of ether

gasoline burning

boiling water

melting butter

I think A and B

Whatever happened to 'please'?

Is it under the bed with your odd socks?    frown

That is where I always look for things.   wink

It will be good when you fid it again.     smiley

1) An endothermic process is when heat is put into something or heat is being absorbed.

A. Water boiling

When water boils it is turning liquid into a gas. In order to change a liquid to a gas, it must absorb the heat from its surroundings.

B. Gasoline Burning

The combustion of the gasoline burning releases the heat.

C. Ice forming on a Pond

In order to change a liquid to a solid, it must release the heat to become a solid.

D. Iodine crystals Subliming

To create those types of crystals it is changing its state from a solid to a liquid, absorbong the heat around it.

Since B and C are exothermic (releasing heat). A and D are the correct answers.

Hope this helps ;P

Oh wow , thank you for such a detailed explanation . I love getting explanations like these because it really helps me understand and I can also take notes. Those were the reasonings as to why I was thinking it was A and D. Thank for checking the first question so far!smiley

You would mostly have to understand the difference between Exothermic and Endothermic:

Exothermic - Releases heat.

Endothermic - Absorbs heat.

Examples are pretty self explanitory.

Please do it will help you in the long run. I promise. I used to get so confused with the two.

Yes they can get really confusing! Is there anyway you can check the second one as well , that is the one i was having the most difficulty on?

Yes, the second one is the most difficult.

2) Exothermic is the process of releasing heat.

A. Evaporation of Ether

This is a little tricky because it has evaporation but ether is a flamible liquid like gasoline. So when its evaporating it is actually releasing heat.

B. Gasoline burning

When gasolin is burnt it releases heat.

C. Boiling water

When water is boiled and transforming from a liquid to gas it need to absorb heat.

D. Melting butter

When butter is being melted it is transforming from a solid to liquid, so it absorbs heat to do so.

Since C and D are endothermic. A and B are your answers.

Hope this helps ;P

This is why I had diffuclty specfically with A since it is a vapor but from your explanation that makes sense as to why it would release heat. Thank for your helpsmiley I will also make note of this.

Yes it was a little difficult. But easier to understand when you know what type of liquid it is. I'm so glad that I helped you ;P

Whoa there , pardner.....evaporating ether is ENDOTHERMIC.....it must absorb heat from surrounding to go from liquid to a gas....cheeky    Being flammable has nothing to do with it....if it is BURNING...THAT would be exothermic.

So what are you saying? It is only C?
