A 10cm by 12cm rectangular container contains some water. When a solid metal cube with volume 216cm3 is placed in the water, the water level comes up level with the top of the cube. In cm, what was the original height of the water in the container?

the side length of the cube   =   \(\sqrt[3]{216}\)  cm   =   6 cm

 

So we know...

 

volume of water + volume of cube   =   10 * 12 * 6  cm3   =   720 cm3

 

volume of water +  216 cm3   =   720 cm3

 

volume of water   =   504  cm3

 

10 cm * 12 cm * original height   =   504  cm3

 

original height   =   504 / 120  cm   =   4.2 cm            smiley
