At the school carnival, the sixth graders are making directional arrows, as shown below.

A polygon shaped like an arrow is shown. The total height of the arrow head and the arrow tail is 9 inches. The base of the arrow tail is 4 inches. The width of the arrow is 6 inches, and the height of the tail of the arrow is 5 inches.

Each arrow is to be painted red. How much area needs to be painted for 1 arrow?

If the height of the arrow head and tail is 9 inches    and the height of the arrow tail is 5 inches, then the height of the arrow itself is  9  - 5  =  4 inches

So....the tail of the arrow is a rectangle of 4 inches width and 5 inches height...so....its area is 4 * 5 = 20 in^2

And the arrow itself has a base of 6 and a height of 4.....so...its area = (1/2)(6)(4)  = 12 in ^2

So....the total  area of the arrow to be painted is   [ 20 + 12 ] in^2  =  32 in^2   [ if we are just painting one side ]

Otherwise.....twice this   if both sides are painted   = 64 in^2
