Factor the following:
18 x^3 - 8 x y^2

Factor common terms out of 18 x^3 - 8 x y^2.
Factor 2 x out of 18 x^3 - 8 x y^2:
2 x (9 x^2 - 4 y^2)

Express 9 x^2 - 4 y^2 as a difference of squares.
9 x^2 - 4 y^2 = (3 x)^2 - (2 y)^2:
2 x (3 x)^2 - (2 y)^2
Factor the difference of two squares. (3 x)^2 - (2 y)^2 = (3 x - 2 y) (3 x + 2 y):

2x (3x - 2y) (3x + 2y)
