Solve for x:
2 x^2 - 7 x + 5 = 0

The left hand side factors into a product with two terms:
(x - 1) (2 x - 5) = 0

Split into two equations:
x - 1 = 0 or 2 x - 5 = 0

Add 1 to both sides:
x = 1 or 2 x - 5 = 0

Add 5 to both sides:
x = 1 or 2 x = 5

Divide both sides by 2:
x = 1                     or                 x = 5/2

2x^2 -7x + 5  = 0

We can rewrite this as

2x^2 - 2x  - 5x  +  5  = 0      factor as

2x ( x  - 1)  -  5 ( x - 1)  = 0        the common factor is ( x - 1)...so.....

(x - 1) ( 2x  -  5)   = 0

Set each factor to 0  and solve for x    and we have that

x  - 1   = 0                                              2x   - 5   = 0

add 1 to both sides                               add 5 to both sides

x = 1                                                       2x   = 5

                                                             divide both sides by 2

                                                                 x  = 5/2
