There are some apple-flavoured and lemon-flavoured sweets in a jar. If 75 apple-flavoured sweets are removed from the jar, the total number of sweets left with be 6 times the number of apple-flavoured sweets left. If 60 lemon-flavoured sweets are remove from the jar, the total number of sweets left will be 3 times the number of apple-flavoured sweets left. How many sweets are there in the jar?

Lets use the variables A and L.

There is, A - 75 + L = 6(A - 75).

Also, A - 75 + L - 60 = 3(A - 75).

solving the equations, I get A = 95, and L = 100.Therefore, the total is 195.

Apple - Flavoured sweets = A

Lemon - Flavoured sweets = L

    (A - 75) + L    =   6 (A - 75)             ,     ( L - 60) + A = 3A

     A - 75 + L    =   6A  - 450                       L - 60 + A = 3A

     SA - L     =   375 ---- 1                            2A - L = -60 ---- 2

 Via Elimination  :  1 - 2  :  3A  =  435

                                            A  =  435/3

                                                =  145

                                            L  =  SA - 375

                                                =  725 - 375

                                                =  350

Total no-of sweets = 145 + 390

                              =  495
