I want a solution since I am confused:

The question:

When numbering the pages of a book starting at 1, what are the 187th and 188th digits written?

I think it means 187 and 188, but I am very sure it's incorrect.

Help?

Anyone ever tell you that you are rather impolite and demanding?  They should.....

1-9   is 9 digits

10 - 99  is 180 more digits      total so far 189

187   would be  in  '98'     as in '8'      188 would be the first '9' in page  99

The 187th digit is =8 of 98. In other words, if you counted ALL the digits from 1, 2, 3......11, 12,.......98, the 8 would be the 187th digit.

So, the 188th digit =9  - or the first 9 of 99 with the same reasoning as above.
