That means 2 times 2.  On this board, an asterisk is sometimes used as a multiplication symbol, especially where using an x as the multiplication symbol could get confused with an "x" used to represent an unknown in an equation.

Yes, but in \(\LaTeX\), you can use \(\times\)or \times.

 

People do mostly avoid using an x though.

 

 

Some people use a dot \(\cdot\) (\cdot in latex) but if you write that out, you might mistake it for a decimal point.  So another alternate solution could be parentheses.

 

Example(s):

 

\(2(2)\text{ instead of }2\cdot 2 \text{ or } 2\times 2\)

Answer: 2 * 2 is 2, 2 times so ti is 4.
