What is \( 6÷2(1+2)\)?

Is it 1 or 9???

Solution:

Using the correct order of operations, you need to solve the part in the parenthesis first.

 So, 1+2=3

Next, we solve the left part, according to the order of operations.

  So: \(6/2=3\)

Next, we get:

3(3)

= 3 x 3

= 9 - the correct answer.

I think that the fact that there is no times sign between the 2 and the bracket makes the 2 a part of the bracket and hence I think that the answer is 1.    I suppose there is some convention somewhere that defines it properly but if normal people don't know the convention that does not help much.

Anyway, it is certainly an indication of why brackets are so important when there is even a hint of ambiguity.  More brackets in this case.
