Water pressure varies linearly with the depth of submersion. The pressure at the surface is 14.7 pound per square inch. Given that a diver experiences approximately 58.8 pounds per square inch of pressure at a depth of 100 feet, what pressure will a submarine encounter when it is a mile below the surface of the atlantic ocean?

We  can create  the points  (depth , pressure)   = ( 0 , 14.7)  and  ( 100 , 58.8)

Take  the  slope  between  these points

[ 58.8 - 14.7  ] /  [ 100  - 0  ]   =    44.1  /  100  =     .441

Using the point  (  0 ,14.7)....the  equation for pressure, p,  is

p =   .441d   +  14.7

1 mile  = 5280 ft = d

p   = .441 (5280)   +  14.7  =    2343.18  lbs  /  in^2

We have P = k(14,7) where P = pressure and k = the rate

at 0 feet is 14.7 lb

calculate, the pressure increases at a rate of 0.441 psi for each foot you descend.

mile is 5280 feet

so 14.7 + 5280(0.441) = ~2343.2 psi
