The length of a rectangle is 6 cm more than the width. A square can be found by tripling the width of the rectangle and reducing its length by 2cm. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.

Let the length of the rectangle  = L

Then the width is  L - 6

 

Tripling the width  = 3(L-6)  = 3L-18

Reducing the length by 2 cm  gives L - 2

 

Since the sides of the squares are the same.....this implies that

 

3L- 18  =  L - 2              add 18, subtract L to / from both sides and we have that

 

2L =  16     divide both sides by 2

 

L = 8

 

So....the dimensions of the rectangle  must be

 

L =  8      and width =   L - 6   =  8 - 6  =   2

 

Does this make sense????
