I don't quite understand the equation for a coordinate plane and slope. I know what the equation is but can someone explain it? THANK YOU
I assume you want to write the equation of a line given two points....OK....!!!
Let's assume that the points are (1,2) and (6,12)
1. To find the slope, first subtract the y coordinates in any order..... I'll use 12 - 2 = 10
2. Now....subtract the x coordinates in the SAME order....so we have.....6 - 1 = 5
3. To find the slope....put (1) over (2) = 10 / 5 = 2
Now....using EITHER of the points.....the equation is
y = slope ( x - x coordinate of point we choose) + y coordinate of the point we choose
So ...using (1,2) we have
y= 2 ( x - 1) + 2 simplify
y = 2x - 2 + 2
y = 2x and that's our line.....!!!
Note that using (5,10) would produce the SAME result
y = 2 ( x - 5) + 10
y = 2x - 10 + 10
y = 2x ..... !!!
Hope that helps....!!!
