To solve:  1/2*X*X = X,

I will write it as:  1/2X² = X

To get rid of fractions, I would multiply both sides by 2:

                                            2(1/2X²) = 2(X)

which becomes:                            X² = 2X

I would subtract 2X from both sides to get all the X-terms to one side:

                                               X² - 2X = 2X - 2X

                                               X² - 2X = 0

Factor:                                   X(X - 2) = 0

So, either      X = 0      or     X - 2 = 0  --->  X = 2
