16. Solve : 6x + 5y = 3 and 9x - 10y = -48. If (a, b) is the solution, what is the sum of a and b ?

6x + 5y  =  3              (multiply this equation by 2)  -->     12x + 10y  =  6

9x - 10y  =  -48          (leave this equation alone)    -->       9x - 10y  =  -48

                                                                                       -------------------

                                      add down the columns:                21x         = -42     --->   x  =  -2

Substitute -2 back in for x in the first equation:

6(-2) + 5y  =  3                                       Since x = -2  and  y = 3, the solution is (-2, 3).

  -12 + 5y  =  3                                        Thus, a = -2  and  b = 3, and a + b = 1

           5y  =  15

             y  =  3
