3x+1=4x-2 im not sure how to figure out the answer.

Since you have variables on both sides (there are x's on both sides), subtract the smaller number of x's from both sides:

Since 3x is smaller than 4x, subtract 3x from both sides:

3x - 3x + 1  =  4x - 3x - 2

              1  =  x - 2

Now, add 2 to both sides:

       1 + 2  =  x - 2 + 2

             3  =  x
