8u  =  3u + 35

Since you have variable on both sides, get rid of the variables from one of the sides. I suggest that you get all the u's to one side and all the pure numbers to the other. Since the only pure number is on the right side, get all the u's to the left side. You do this by getting rid of the u's from the right side by subtracting 3u from both sides.

8u - 3u  =  3u - 3u + 35

       5u  =  35                              Now, get rid of the 5 by dividing both sides by 5.

  5u / 5  =  35 / 5

         u  =                      <--- How much is 35 divided by 5? That is your answer.
