(x - 3)²  =  64

Find the square root of both sides:          (don't forget to use the ± sign)

x - 3  =  ± 8

So, either  x - 3  =  8          or          x - 3  =  -8              (now add 3 to both sides)

                    x  =  11         or               x  =  -5

is ^ multiplying? if so...

use distributive property even though the 2 is behind the parentheses

2x - 6 = 64

now add 6 to both sides

2x = 70

now divide by 2 on both sides

x = 35

and there's your answer!
