Generally speaking, if you have fractions in an equation, the equation will be easier to solve if you get rid of all the fractions by multiplying each term by a common denominator.

With denominators of 8 and 4, use 8 as the common denominator:

8(c + 1/8)  =  8(c/4)           On the left side, use the distributive property:

8(c) + 8(1/8)  =  8(c/4)

8c + 1 = 2c                         Get all the c's to one side by subtracting 8c from both sides:

       1 = -6c
