CPhill while reading your answer i just figured out another method which could give the same right answer !
check this out :
let 7 and 8 be 7x and 8x.
ATQ ; 7x +8x = 45
=15x =45
x= 45/15
x=3
therefore ,
7x = 7*3 = 21
8x=8*3=24
isnt that correct
by the way thanks for another formula but dont mind i find this one a lil hard
OK, rosala....let x be the first number and let y be the second number....and we're told that their ratio is 7 to 8 .....so we have x to y = 7 to 8 ....or...put mathematically...
x/y =7/8 Now let's multiply both sides by "y"
x = (7/8)y Notice that this is what x equals, so, since we are told that x + y = 45, we have.......
(7/8)y + y = 45
(7/8 + 1)y = 45 so .........
(15/8)y = 45 Multiply by the reciprocal of (15/8) = (8/15) on both sides
y = 45*(8 / 15) The 45 and the 15 "cancel" to 3.....so we have
y = 3*8 = 24 And x = (7/8)y....so......
x = (7/8) (24) = 21
So the two numbers are 21 and 24
Note that the ratio of these is (21/24) = (7/8)....as requested.......
