Here is a question I am having problems with.  A 16 foot tall adult giraffe standing next to a petrified stump casts a 8ft shadow.  If the petrified stump is 6ft tall then how long is its shadow?

If a 16 foot tall giraffe casts an 8 foot tall shadow, then, by the same ratio, a 6 foot tall stump casts a 3 foot tall shadow.

16/8  =  6/x

Cross multiply:  16·x  =  6·8          --->         16x  =  48         --->         x  =  3
