When a number is followed by a letter in algebra, or when two letters are next to each other, there is always an invisable multiply sign between them.  And a multiply sign on the computer is given by a *

the * is used so that it is not confused with an x which is  often one of the letters (pronumeral)

so

5xymeans5×x×y

and if you do not know how to write this like I have, you would write it as

5xy=5*x*y

Does that help?
