Is -3^2 the same as (-3)^2

-3^2 represents the opposite of (3 squared) which means to square three first and then find the opposite of that number.

-3^2  =  -(3^2) =  -(3·3)  =  -9

(-3)^2 represents finding the opposite of three first (that is, negative three) and then squaring that answer.

(-3)^2  =  (-3)·(-3)  =  9
