A shop had a number of T-shirts for sale. After selling 72 of them in the morning and 4/9 of the remainder in the afternoon, it was left with 1/3 of the T-shirts. How many T-shirts were sold altogether?

let the total no. of t shirts be n.

sold in morning = 72

sold in noon = 4/9 (n - 72)

The shirts left = 1/3n

Next, n = {72 + 4/9 (n - 72) + 1/3 n}

n = (72 + 4n/9 - 288/9 + 1/3n

n/1 ((648 - 4n - 288 + 3n)/9) => (9n - 7n) = 360

                                => 2n = 360 => n = 180

total t shirts = 180 => t shirts sold = (180 * 2/3)

                                    => (60 * 2) => 120
