If p = 2/3 and q = 1/3,

then p² + 2pq  =  (2/3)² + 2(2/3)(1/3)

                       =  4/9 + 4/9  =  8/9

When you multiply fractions, multiply the numerator times the numerator and the denominator times the denominator.
