If you are going to solve for  b  then you want to eliminate the  a  term.

If you multiply the second equation by  -3:   (multiply each term by  -3)

     3a - 4b  =  17

    -3a - 9b  =  9

--------------------                 Add down the columns:

         -13b  =  26                 Finish:

              b  =  -2
