how do you get a bigger number when you divide?

By dividing by a decimal.

 

Ex. 14/.5=28

Or basically anything less than 1.

 

It makes sense that if you were to divide (put) the number 10 into 2 piles, you would get 5 in each pile.

If you put 10 into 1 pile, you would get 10 in each pile.

If you put 10 into half a pile (divide by 0.5), the pile would have 20 in it; your original number just made up half of that pile.
