--->              -1.5x  =  16                                (add 16 to both sides)

--->                    x  =  -10 2/3                         (divide both sides by -1.5)

If the problem is  y  =  .5x² -2x - 16

--->   .5x² - 2x - 16  =  0

--->     x²  - 4x - 32  =  0                              (multiply both sides by 2)

--->   (x - 8)(x + 4)  =  0                              (factor)

--->  either  x = 8  or  x = -4
