To subtract fractions, they must both have the same denominator.

You can change 1/4 into a fraction if you multiply both the numerator and denominator by 2.

7/8 - (1/4)(2/2)

  =  7/8 - 2/8               Now subtract 2 from 7.

  =  5/8
