If the problem is:     y  =  6 - (1/4)(-1 + y)

Use the distributive property:  y  =  6 - (1/4)(-1) - (1/4)(y)

Simplify:                                   y  =  6 + 1/4 - (1/4)y

Simplify:                                   y  =  25/4 - (1/4)y

Multiply both sides by 4:        4y  =  25 - y

Add y to both sides:              5y  =  25

Divide by 5:                              y  =  5
