Since the ratio is 3:4, there are 3 + 4 or 7 "shares".

Dividing $56.00 by 7, gives a value of $8.00 per share.

Since George has 3 shares, he gets 3 x $8.00 or $24.00.

Since Brian has 4 shares, he gets 4 x $8.00 or $32.00.

If you want to do this by means of an equation, turn the ratio 3:4 into 3x:4x.

Again, adding 3x + 4x, you get 7x which is equal to $56.00.

--->   7x  =  $56.00

--->  x  =  $8.00

So, 3x = 3 x $8.00  =  $24.00 and 4x = 4 x $8.00  =  $32.00
