So I have the given problem a = 2 + 3a + 6? I want to make sure what i wrote is correct I had four options

-8

-4

 8

 4

I choose negative four and here's my work I am just slightly confused because I have always had a given value on the other side of the equation never just a letter.

a = 2 + 3a + 6? first I gathered my like terms

 a = 2 + 3a + 6 then I added the numbers

 = 8 + 2a then I carried over the 8 to the other side making sure to be subtracting it from nothing resulting negative 8

and 2 goes into - 8 -4 times so I got -4 for A in the equation.

                                                              a  =  2 + 3a + 6

subtract 3a from both sides —»      a –3a  =  2 + 6

                                                           –2a  =  8

divide both sides by –2                           a  =  –4

You did it right.  It's just my personal preference to have the unknown on the left hand side.
