Consider it like this:

 

You have a square, and all sides are 10 units long. The area, therefore, would be 10*10 = 100 square units.

 

You take the sides of the square and increase them by 10% (or 110% of the original). Take 10% of 10 (=1) and then add it back into the original. You now have a square with all sides 11 units long. This square now has an area of 11*11 = 121 square units.

 

At this point, you can see that the square increases from the original 21 units. That is another 21% added on, and that is your final answer: A 21% increase.
