If the equation is of this form:  y = mx + b, then the slope is m.

Examples:

y = 2x + 7   --->   slope = 2

y = x - 4   --->   y = 1x + 7   --->   slope = 1

y = -6x    --->  slope = -6

y = (1/3)x + 12   --->   slope = 1/3

y = x   --->   y = 1x   --->   slope = 1
