If I were to multiply 3x to the 5th power by 8, would I get 24x to the 5th power or 3x to the 5th power times 8?

When you say "3x to the 5th power" do you mean (3x)^5 or do you mean 3(x^5)?

If it is the first case, you would get 8·(3x)^5  =  8(3x)(3X)(3X)(3X)(3X)  =  1944X^5.

If it is the second case, you would get 8·3(x^5)  =  24x^5.
