1 3/4 + 4 3/8

Rewrite both of the common fractions into fractions with a common denominator. Since the denominators are 4 and 8, the common denominator is 8:

1 6/8 + 4 3/8  = 5 9/8  =  5 + 1 1/8  =  6 1/8

I did this rather quickly; if you have questions about any of the steps, please ask.
