To subtract fractions, get a common denominator.

The denominators are  8  and  32  and since  8  divides evenly into  32,  make  32  your common denominator.

To change  5/8  into a fraction with a denominator of  32,  multiply both the numerator and denominator by 4.

(5/8) x (4/4)  =  20/32

5/8  -  2 /32    =    20/32 - 2/32    =    18/32   (T  his can be reduced to  9/16.)
