The triangle proportionality theorem says that any line parallel to the base of the triangle that intersects the other two sides,  divides the other two sides into the same ratio.

Given triangle ABC with base BC, X on side AB, and Y on side AC:

     if  XY || BC,  then  AX/XB  =  AY/YC
