1 = (x - 4)²
Find the square root of both sides, use the symbol ± on either side:
√1 = ±1 √(x - 4)² = x - 4
±1 = x - 4
Add 4 to both sides: 4 ± 1 = x ---> x = 4 + 1 = 5 x = 4 - 1 = 3
