DS, going on from what Chris posted, all you have to do is combine like terms and solve for x:
x - 5.4 + x = 11.9
2x - 5.4 = 11.9
2x = 17.3
x = 8.65...
1st day, x - 5.4 --> 8.65 - 5.4 = 3.25 inches.
2nd day, x --> 8.65 inches.

Yes, square root it.
Calculate the mean first and then the standard deviation. Then:
2 standard deviations from the mean means...mean + 2*s.d. & mean - 2*s.d (Note, both + and -).
3, 4, & 5 s.d. are computed similarily by replacing 2* with 3, 4, or 5*.
Oh, yes, for the standard deviation...after you divide, you end up with the variance. So, you have to do the square root to find the deviation.
For the mean, add all the values listed and divide by the # of values.
For the median, place the values in order from least to greatest and find the middle term. Simply find the middle term.
For the mode, find the value that appears the most in that set.
You can do this, too, Nataszaa!! It may be tedious work, but it's good practice!!
For the mean, all you have to do is add all the numbers and divide by the # of values listed (in this case, 12).
For the standard deviation, subtract each of the values by the mean and square them. Then, add all the results and divide by 12.
