The percent decrease is giveen by

[Old Cost - New Cost ] / Old Cost        do the top first, then divide !!

Let x be the number of kids tickets sold and y be the number of adult tickets sold

So we have  

x + y = 432

And the number of each type of ticket sold times its price gives us the total reveue....so we have

20x + 50y = 18240          and using the first equation and subtracting x from both sides, we have.... y  = 432 - x     and subbing this into the 2nd equation for y, we have

20x + 50(432 -x) = 18240   simplify

20x + 21600 - 50x = 18240  

-30x + 21600 = 18240     subtract 21600 from each side

-30x = -3360     divide by -30 on each side

x =112  and that's the number of kids tickets sold

And  y= 432 - x =  432 - 112  = 320   and that's the  number of adult tickets sold

I like your logic......let's look at it mathematically

(1/20x+5≤6    subtract 5 from both sides

(1/2)x ≤1    multiply both sides by 2

x ≤ 2         and everybody is "happy"

3^-x = 243

This says that

1/3^x = 243   which implies that

3^x = 1/243   but 243 = 3^5   ... so.... 1/243 = 1/3^5  = 3^-5  ...so...

3^x = 3^-5   and it's obvious that x = -5
