Well, I actually happen to be on the Train Saftey Society, (TSS). We have noticed this problem at the TSS, and have been encouraging math teachers around the globe to stop using such horrible depictions! We have had no luck, despite telling the teachers that this is setting a bad example for the kids. We are working as hard as we can to solve this, and will get back to you at a later date.

1) I have still been getting these phantom messages. It does seem like sometimes they'll apear and then just disappear once I go to a different page (that isn't my message page).

3)I believe this happens to me too. I sent a message asking CPhill a question once, and he never responded. Maybe he never got it!

I just looked at the sticky topic "Information pages worth keeping or developing," and I can agree that it could use some cleaning up.

A sugestion I have for this is maybe we should just have one huge post containing all this information, and the author (most likely you, Melody) could just "edit" the post when more information is wanted to be added.

Also, maybe a good way to organize this is by "grade levels" of mathematics, if you will. Looking something like this:

Algebra:

-link(s)

Geometry:

-link(s)

Triganometry:

-link(s)

Probability:

-link(s)

Misc. pages:

-link(s)

...and you get the idea

That way, when someone is refering back to the sticky about say, solving inequalities, they can just go under algebra, and go directly to that link, without looking through the whole page of reposts and stuff.

The only problem with this is that there might be a limit to how much text can go in a single forum post. If this problem arises, maybe the creator of the site could allow an option for a no-max charcter count for only mods when posting something.

Also, tell the creator of the site (Andrew, I believe?) that I appriciate his work on the site, it's really made well.

Finally, thanks to your dedication to this site, Melody, without your and dedication, the site would not run as it is running!

I actually learned some of this myself while looking at the wikipedia page.

I didn't know the whole circumference/diameter thing before reading it.

This equation is technically incorrect, because there is two equal signs in it...

I'm thinking you didn't mean for the second one to actually be part of the equation. In this case, here's how you'd solve it. 

N=5.54(102)2/(10)2

N = 565.08(2)/(10)(2)

N = 1130.16/10*2

N = 113.016*2

N = 226.032

You also could have meant...

N=5.54(102)²/(10)²

...Which would give you a different answer.

Please be very carefull when typing in questions, so you can guarantee a good answer. :)

Another way you can think of this is with fractions, if it helps you visualize it better.

99/100 is 99%

Well...3/8 can't be reduced, so 3/8 is it's lowest term.

Pi = 3.14159265359, or usually shorted to something like 3.14

Actually, pi is proven to just keep going forever with decimal digits. This pattern is also unrepetitive, or having no patern to it.

Or as Wikipedia says it, "It's [pi's] decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanent repeating pattern. The digits appear to be randomly distributed although no proof of this has yet been discovered."

Pi is a ratio of a circle's circumference to it's diameter, as shown below.

This means that a circle's circumference is a little over 3 times as big as it's diameter.

This also means that you can write pi as pi = circumference/diameter:

Because of this, you will often use pi when your dealing with circles.

Do you mean where it says Score: +32?

If this is what you mean, score is a point system you get for answereing questions.

If someone thinks you gave a good answer they can thumbs up for for 1 point, or thumbs down for -1

Also, mods can give a thumbs up for 3 points and a thumbs down for -3 points,

Finally, the person who asked the question can give you a thumbs up for 5 points, and a thumbs down for -5 points.

The "Top answerers" board on the right of you screen is based on this point system.
