The average of 6 numbers is 6. This means that all 6 numbers have to add up to 36.

It doesn't matter what the numbers are, but in order to average out to 6, the sum of all the numbers divided by 6 has to equal 6.

The only thing that gives 6 when divided by 6 is 36.

Now, 3 is subtracted from 4 numbers, for a total of 12.

(36-12)/6 tells us our new average

24/6

4 is the new average.

(4x - 1) + (2x + 2) = 1

This is the same thing as:

(4x) - (1) + (2x) + (2) = 1

Now we combine like terms (combine the 4x and 2x together. Combine the -1 and +2 together)

(6x) + (1) = 1

So the answer would be: "The equation can become 6x + 1 = 1 by combining like terms."

Your question is a bit unclear.

Are you wondering, "What operation do I use to find the cost per gallon?"

If this is what you mean, you want to use division.

13.60 ÷ 15 = ?            ---The total cost divided by the number of gallons gives you the cost per gallon

or rounded to the nearesnt cent, $0.91 per gallon.

I had to have my dad help me with this one, I was getting confused on the whole different bases deal.

So I give a tip of the hat to my dad. :)

We need to set this up as an algebra problem.

But before we do that, we need to make sure all our numbers are in the same base, so well convert all the numbers to yards, becuase that's what they sell the concrete in.

12 feet = 4 yards

6 inches = 1/6 yards

And we know that width*length*height @ $98 per yard = 108.89

So width*length*height*98=108.89

We don't know the width, so let's call this "x"

x*4*1/6*98=108.89

x*4/6*98=108.89

x*392/6=108.89

x*65.3333=108.89          ---Divide both sides by 65.3333

x = 1.66666

x = 1 and 2/3 yards               ---Change to feet by multiplying the right side by 3

x = 5 feet

So the width of the driveway is 5 feet.
