After you distributed, you got: 

5x + 20 - 8  =  32 + x          (This is correct!)

Look at the left side:  you have  + 20 - 8;  combine these to get  12:

5x + 12  =  32 + x

You need to get all the x-terms to one side; you can get rid of the x-term on the right side by subtracting x from both sides:

4x + 12  =  32

This is the equation of a parabola. Since this parabola opens upward, the vertex will be the lowest point. The x-value of the vertex is found by  -b/(2a).

a = 2    b = -8     --->     -(-8)/(2·2)  =  8/4  =  2

f(4) = 2(2)² - 8(2) + 19  =  11     <---  The minimum value of the function.

If you are trying to solve the equation:  -2x - 6 < 2

then:  add 6 to both sides:                        -2x < 8

and:  divide by -2 (because you are dividing by a negative, you must change the direction of the inequality symbol:                               x > -4

If you are refering to the randInt function on the TI calculator, randInt(a, b) will give you a random integer in the range from a ≤ x ≤ b.

randInt(79) will give you an error message because it needs two limits, such as randInt(1,79) or randInt(79,100).

If  f(x)  =  x² -2x + 2

then  f(x + h)  =  (x + h)² - 2(x + h) + 2

                        =  x² + 2xh + h² - 2x - 2h + 2

[f(x + h) - f(x)] / h =  [ ( x² + 2xh + h² - 2x - 2h + 2 ) - ( x² -2x + 2 ) ] / h

                              =  [ x² + 2xh + h² - 2x - 2h + 2 - x² + 2x - 2 ) ] / h

                              =  [ 2xh + h² - 2h ] / h

                              =  2x - 2 + h

If the number is a mixed number, turn it into a common (improper) fraction.

Then, divide the numerator by the denominator.

Examples:

     3/5  =  0.6

     4 1/3  =  13/3  =  4.333333....

There is no real answer because a positive number times a positive number must be positive and a negativ number times a negative number is also positive, so, if there is a number, it can't be either positive or negative.

However there are "imaginary" numbers that work (they are different; they aren't either positive nor negative):

√(-2)  =  √(-1)·√2  =  i√2                              The letter "i" is used to replace √(-1).

5x² + 20x

They both contain a 5 and an x, so factor out 5x:

5x(x + 4)

First make certain that the calculator is in degree mode or radian mode, which one you need.

Then, hit (2nd) (cos) and enter the number.

When you hit (2nd), (cos) will become (invcos) or (arccos) or (acos), depending upon the calculator; they aall mean the same.

Since  1 x 1  =  1, 1 is a square root of 1.

Since  -1 x -1  =  1,  -1 is also a square root of 1.
