I noticed this wrong answer when Rom made the post. My first instinct was to correct it, but I realized Rom is tacking (into the wind). That is, he did this intentionally. Rom correctly answered this exact same question, here https://web2.0calc.com/questions/probability_76 a few hours before, and I think it unlikely his brain fell asleep before answering the next one. . Even if it did, he could still answer these questions.

I’m not sure if Rom was tacking or jibbing for this one, but the idea is the same –it’s intentional.

Rom usually corrects his mistakes or deletes the post. But these he leaves in plain view. So now the question is why?

Logic brings his banana-boat load of bananas into web2.0calc’s port periodically and expects us to peel them. We usually oblige because we like peeling bananas and some of us like to eat them. While we are examining and peeling theses bananas, we notice that Logic does not seem to be logically engaged, in fact, he doesn’t seem to be engaged at all.

One clear indication of disengagement is Logic repeats questions—questions that have correct and clearly presented solutions

Looking at his profile, you can see 127 questions and 7 answer/replies. Logic is not an engaged student. The replies are highly abbreviated –except for one –it’s the one where he responds to Rom’s wrong answer.

Posting an incorrect solution is an effective (and inspired) way to compel a response from an otherwise unengaged student. It’s also a great way to troll. . . . Nauseated sometimes did this. Here’s one where he implies an intentional error. https://web2.0calc.com/questions/factorise_3#r1

Hummm… Though I’m quite capable writing a troll post like this… for the record, I didn’t create this post.

There is another troll on here, one with gorilla DNA and dubious genetic enhancement, who usually wields blunt instruments of curse-words and vulgarities, but sometimes he sharpens his teeth and bites. He usually does this when trolling the more intelligent members and guests.

Which ever method he uses, his posts are usually amusing (though not always). This one is a long way from his masterpiece, but it still ranks above average. Out of respect for the particular target(s) of this post, I’m keeping my laughter below the threshold of LMAO… It’s not easy though!

Yes. An informal proof is not difficult to demonstrate.

Numbers that have an odd prime will have at least one sequence of consecutive numbers that returns its sum. Powers of two (2) are the only numbers that do not have odd primes, so there are no consecutive numbers that add to a power of two (2)

Contradiction (proof part 1).

Defining N as the sum of an odd number of consecutive numbers. An odd number of consecutive numbers will have as its average a whole number, that is the middle number. For this, N = a whole number (the average) * odd number (number of consecutive numbers). This means N has an odd number factor. If \(N = 2^k\) then (N) cannot have an odd number factor. Proof by contradiction that no odd number of consecutive numbers will sum to N, if \(N = 2^k\)

Contradiction (proof part 2)

Defining N as the sum of an even number of consecutive numbers.

An even number of consecutive numbers will have an average that is half the sum of its two middle numbers.

Enigmatic is good! DC Thomas Copper is often enigmatic, and he is sometimes a paradox. In his prime, he was a ferocious rodent hunter, he still has keen detective skills, enhanced by his natural curiosity, and he’s a mediocre embezzler of monopoly money.
